It starts with Packaging
When you send a parcel by courier, you need to bear in mind that it will go through a LOT of handling, from the courier who collects it from you, to a depot, to (most probably) a machine sorter to the final delivery driver tasked with handing your parcel to the recipient … alongside hundreds of other items of all shapes.
If your parcel is in any way delicate or fragile, it is best to pack your item in a strong cardboard box with bubble wrap. If your item is lightweight and not as fragile, poly mailing bags can be a cost-effective solution. Good packaging will significantly reduce the chances of your parcel collapsing, ripping or damaging your items within.
Can you actually ship it?
Before booking with a courier, always check whether your parcel contents can actually be sent! Your courier will have a list of prohibited items that you can check. This is particularly important if you are shipping an item overseas. Be aware that if you send a prohibited item, your shipment may be delayed, refused or sent back to you; and you will be unlikely to receive any compensation. Also, have your customs paperwork ready if shipping outside the EU – your courier may be able to provide advice about the various forms required, but it is your responsibility to ensure the paperwork is filled out correctly. Failure to do so could result in delays, refused delivery, or a big nasty bill for customs charges.
Track your Parcels
All reputable couriers will provide online tracking information. Keep an eye on your parcel’s tracking online. This can save you a lot of time and expense, as the quicker you realise something is wrong, the easier it is to locate your missing parcel!
